Captain Westie (Ire) 2016

2016 bay gelding Westerner x Simons Niece (Flemensfirth)

The 2m4f bumper at Thurles towards the end of January was ran in very Heavy conditions, 14 started and there was 190 lengths between first and last at the line!

The 5yo son of Westerner, Captain Westie was having his first run and was right up there all the way forcing the pace but at the same time using up too much gas over this extended bumper trip in awful ground.  Having said that, he still kept on to be second to the favourite who is a year older and had three runs under his belt with some smart bumper and hurdle form. There was also a Gordon Elliott trained 2nd fav finishing 30 lengths behind him.

I saw him in his yard before he ran, he is 16’3 with effortless movement and all about chasing in the future, from the good staying family of Simon, Black Humour and more recently Silver Hallmark.

His sire Westerner has produced staying chasers Champagne West, Empire Of Dirt and stayers hurdle winner Cole Harden but also Western Warhorse who won the Arkle for David Pipe. His damsire, Flemensfirth is also that of Grade 1 jumpers Identity Thief, Next Destination and Roksana. He is sure to make a staying chaser in time on his page and the evidence of his bumper.

If he had gone to a maiden point to point, which he was intending to (but for Covid stopping points), he would not have come off the bridle as he jumps so well, and we would be looking at a much bigger figure for this horse with the sales market at present.  He is also vetted and ready to go.

Here he is pictured back in February (top) and now in September.  In that time, the third horse in his bumper (over 30 lengths back) has won over hurdles and is rated 127 in Ireland plus the fourth horse has won 3 hurdle races in UK and Ireland for Denise Foster and is now rated 130!
